Gwendolyn Wilkes Rainbow Center and Eagles Landing Outreach
Mission Statement
The Gwendolyn Wilkes Rainbow Center is a multifaceted nonprofit organization, which reaches out to the community and is inclusive of the whole family unit and age groups. It seeks to empower wholeness in the family unit. Since its inception in 1992, it has sought a high standard of excellence in all that has been attempted. The Gwendolyn Wilkes Rainbow Center reaches out to the community through a free clothing bank and food bank which served over 60,000 locally in a single year, a Child Care Center, that has been given honors for educational achievement, working with children from homes of which 90% are low income families; an Adult Day Treatment Center Respite Care Program, with tender loving care, warm meals, professional staffing, of which 100% participants are from low income families; and transient shelter and some assistance with the homeless through the Homeless Resource Network, are all arms of the Center, as well as most efforts are through volunteer service. The Center provides transportation, physical and social activities for the before- and after-school programs and works in collaboration with local organizations.
The Center was started in 1992 to reach out to the homeless, naked, educate and assist children, counsel youth especially those on drugs and in gangs not limited to the latter! The elderly are cared for daily. Hot meals are prepared for those in need as well as free nonperishable food, clothing, personal care items, and home furnishings. The Center provides Thanksgiving Baskets and hot meals during the holidays for the community, as well as toys for thousands of needy children for Christmas through the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program, with support from local businesses, organizations and individuals. In other words, the Center was established to be an outreach to those who are in need, both locally and abroad.
As a result, the Center has received numerous Community Service awards, to include the Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Inc. Award, National Daily Points of Light Foundation Award, National Caring Institute Award, Legislative Black Caucus Volunteer of the Year Award, Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia State Beauty Culture League Community Service Award, Sojourner Truth Award, Charming Shoppes, Inc., which includes Lane Bryant, Catherine’s, etc., American Business Women Association Community Service Award, just to name a few. In 2008, the Center received the Friend of Nigeria Award which is given by Nigerian people from all over the world to a person who contributes to the country but is not a native. The Center has also been featured in the Columbus and The Valley Magazine, Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Bayonet, and the Columbus Ledger Enquirer. In September 2014, the Center received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Sanford Bishop.
